Valerie Cole lives in Philadelphia with her guitar builder husband and lovable cocker spaniel. A graduate of The Art Institute of Philadelphia and Drexel University, her love of storytelling began as an intern in MTV’s animation department.
She's always looking for the next big thing to obsess over. Her love for research has led her into some strange places, from studying the anatomy of the human heart (and how best to break it) to mortuary science.
Her favorite stories to write are intense psycho thrillers and heart breaking contemporaries.
You can find her online fangirling about her love for books and Channing Tatum on her blog and tweeting and Instragraming under @ValerieColeYA.
Writers who make Valerie's heart thump are: Rebecca Skloot, A.S. King, Sara Zarr, Jodi Lynn Anderson, Cynthia Hand, Lucy Christopher, and Nova Ren Suma.
Some Things About Me:
I grew up in Jessup, Maryland, a prison town right outside Baltimore.
I spent the first twenty years of my life trying to leave Maryland. I will now spend the next twenty trying to find my way back.
I was an intern at MTV for the animated series, Spy Groove. It was about two agents doing super spy things. The series only aired for four episodes.
I have two degrees: one in animation, where I discovered my love for storytelling, and one in communications and writing, where I actually learned to story-tell.
I worked in marketing and advertising for seven years. I know all sorts of things about how to make you buy stuff.
My husband is a guitar builder. Our basement is full of wood and paint and wires, and sometimes my house smells like the inside of a nail polish bottle.
My bookshelf is organized by color, and I remember the color of each and every spine.
I write in a very, very pink room.
My favorite book stores are The Strand in NYC and Children's Book World in Haverford, PA.
